Isn’t it a great feeling to have those weeks of sacrifice during lockdown rewarded with the freedoms we can now enjoy, to be amongst others without worry! If you are like us, you are loving having nearly everything back to normal. We used the time at Level 4 and 3 to plan on creating a new normal of connecting with you, our awesome customers. We have planned a new seasonal newsletter, greater social media presence (we would love you to follow us on Facebook or Instagram if you don’t already) and we are celebrating our community of people who wear fabulous glasses.

We hope you will take a moment to have a read of our latest newsletter for some hints and tips for winter driving, latest eyewear trends for all ages in your family and a bit of Orewa Optics history.

A lot of you ask about our story, so here is Chapter 1, of our 3-part journey to show you who, why and how we are here.
Orewa Optics was established in 1987 by Guenther and Margareta Lammer, who had moved to NZ from Austria early that year. Guenther, a Dispensing Optician, became well known in Orewa for his skills, quality products and service while Margareta, with her business and fashion talents, ran a tight ship. Petra, their daughter, started as a trainee Dispensing Optician working alongside Guenther in 1993.

Interesting fact: the store originally had a vaulted ceiling, and the second floor with our staff room, office and small workshop was added later on in 1997.

Driving in the Winter Sun

It looks like this winter all of us will be having a ‘stay-cation” in New Zealand and discovering our hidden gems. As we think about hitting the road, the AA has some good advice.

May to August are the worst months for sun-strike, however it is something to be aware about during all winter months.

Sun-strike is when the angle of sunlight hitting a car’s windscreen creates a blinding glare; with the sun low in the sky on clear winter mornings and evenings, sun-strike can be genuinely dangerous.

Please take extra care when approaching intersections and pedestrian crossings.

Here are some tips to beat the glare:
• Keep your windscreen clean (inside and out).
• If possible, pull over and wait until visibility improves.
• Wear polarised sunglasses. Good-quality polarised eye wear will reduce the effect of sun-strike; consider investing in prescription sunglasses if needed.
• Use your headlights during the day, to increase the chances of being seen.

Our Optometrists are able to resume eye exams. Please check the government guidance for Alert Level 2 if you are immune-compromised, or over 70 years of age. If you feel more comfortable for our staff to be wearing a face-mask when helping you, please do let us know when you make your appointment .

To keep us all safe we are following the guidelines from the Ministry of Health. This includes minimising the number of people in-store, contact tracing, sanitisation of frames and all equipment between eye exams, as well as practising all safety and hygiene protocols.

We are operating a one bubble in, one bubble out policy with a maximum of 3 bubbles in store at a time. We appreciate your understanding if you have a short wait before you can enter.

And remember, stay safe. We hope you and your family will continue to stay safe and well. We are proud to be part of our team of 5 million!

Did your glasses drive you crazy over lock-down because they are crooked, broken, slipping down your nose and annoying you? Perhaps they simply need a general clean and service. You are welcome to call us and make a time to see Petra, Angela or Christine to find a solution.

If you have damaged your glasses and plan on making an insurance claim, we are happy to help as always! Your insurer may try and direct you to one of their preferred suppliers, but you are entitled to stay with the people you trust. Please contact us and we will be happy to guide and assist you through the process.

We’re here for you at Level 3

We hope you and your family are staying safe and well in our bubbles over this time. It’s a strange season of disruption but also a time we can re-focus, find new hobbies (breadmaking anyone??) and enjoy finding new ways to connect with family and friends.

Our team are all fit and well – Grant is growing a beard, Anuja is learning to cook so she will be on form when she gets married next year, Helen has started her Ocular Therapeutics course (not much fun there!), Petra has been picking, cooking and pressing loads of apples, Angela has been amusing friends on Facebook, Christine has learned to crochet, Laura has been making photobooks, Adele has walked 200km+ so far, and Tanya has been home-schooling.

We want to update you on what Level 3 means for Orewa Optics and for you
We will follow all guidelines from the Government and Ministry of Health to ensure the safety of our team and you.

How we can help you…

At Level 3, not much has changed really. Our priority is still to help you address your urgent needs with minimum face to face contact. To do this we need you to telephone (leave a message) or email first, because we can see you by APPOINTMENT ONLY if needed.

At Level 3, We CAN Help You With:

Acute Eye Emergency

You must telephone us first, and one of our Optometrists will talk through your concerns with you and establish a good plan of action to keep you and us safe.

Contact Lenses
We are able to order your contact lenses from our major suppliers to be delivered to your door at no extra charge.

Contact Lens Solutions and Dry Eye Drops
These can still be supplied with local delivery or courier at no extra charge to you.

At Level 3, We Will TRY To Help You With:

Glasses Repairs and Replacements
At Level 3 we may be able to arrange repairs or replacement of your glasses. Telephone or email us first to work out a plan of action.

At Level 3, We CAN’T Help You WITH:

Routine Eye Examinations
These are unable to take place while we are at Level 3. We will let you know as soon as we are able to!

Please contact us by telephone 09 426 6646 (and leave a message) or email eyecare@orewaoptics.co.nz anytime – we will be checking these regularly. Our priority is to help you with minimum physical contact.

We will discuss your needs, and we can make an appointment for you to visit the store if this is appropriate.

For any customers with an appointment in-store, please note:

there will be a strict one in-one out policy with contactless payment only
staff will use PPE as required
sanitation will occur between appointments
